The other is straighter, (up to 30 m tall) unbranched, and grows in the interior.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leaves &amp; Twigs:<\/strong> The paired needles are 3-7 cm long, somewhat twisted in lodgepole pine and stiffer and shorter in shore pine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flowers &amp; Fruits:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"overflow:hidden;\">\n<li>The seed cones (4-6 cm long cylinders) often point backwards toward the tree trunk.<\/li>\n<li>Note the short prickles on the scales of the cones.<\/li>\n<li>The reddish green, male pollen cones occur in dense clusters at the base of the new shoots.<\/li>\n<li>The date of pollen release varies as a result of its wide distribution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Habitat: <\/strong>The lodgepole pine is a wide ranging species, and can be found in both coastal bogs and shallow sub-alpine soils.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PlantWatch Pointers: <\/strong>Tag a typical tree for observation.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>To Observe:<\/strong> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First bloom: when the first pollen is being shed by the male cones on the observed tree (3 places).<\/li>\n<li>Mid bloom: when 50% of the male cones are abundantly shedding pollen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Distribution Map:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naturewatch.ca\/plantwatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/09\/pinus_contorta_map.jpg\" alt=\"Distribution Map\" width=\"auto\" \/><\/p>\n<p> <strong>This species is monitored in:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alberta<\/li>\n<li>British Columbia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote style=\"margin: 2% 5%;
