In autumn, the needles turn yellow and fall from the tree.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leaves &amp; Twigs:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left:5%; overflow:hidden;\">\n<li>The long, slender branches have small woody stumps that produce the needle bundles.<\/li>\n<li>Needles, 1-2.5 cm long, emerge as soft green tufts during spring growth. Each tuft can have 10-20 needles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Flowers &amp; Fruits:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Male and female cones can appear on the same branches, but observe male cones only for PlantWatch.<\/li>\n<li>Male cones: small, less noticeable mounds of yellow-brown pollen sacs that wither and fall after shedding pollen.<\/li>\n<li>Female cones: pinkish-purple mini-cones about 1 cm long.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Habitat: <\/strong>Grows in moist to wet areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PlantWatch Pointers:<\/strong> Tag a typical tree for observation.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>To Observe:<\/strong> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First bloom: when the first pollen is being shed by the male cones on the observed tree (3 places).<\/li>\n<li>Mid bloom: when 50% of the male cones are abundantly shedding pollen.<\/li>\n<li>Leafing: when the tufts of needles are lengthening considerably and starting to spread open at the tip (3 places).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Distribution Map:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naturewatch.ca\/plantwatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/09\/larix_laricina_map.jpg\" alt=\"Distribution Map\" width=\"auto\" \/><\/p>\n<p> <strong>This species is monitored in:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alberta<\/li>\n<li>British Columbia<\/li>\n<li>Manitoba<\/li>\n<li>New Brunswick<\/li>\n<li>Newfoundland and Labrador<\/li>\n<li>Northwest Territories<\/li>\n<li>Nova Scotia<\/li>\n<li>Ontario<\/li>\n<li>Prince Edward Island<\/li>\n<li>Quebec<\/li>\n<li>Saskatchewan<\/li>\n<li>Yukon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote style=\"margin: 2% 5%; padding: 1%; border-left: 5px solid #fdb714; background-color: #ff8200; float: left; width: 90%; color: #fff; font-style:italic;\"><p>Larch is the only conifer that sheds all of its needles annually.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Larch (Larix laricina) Also known as: tamarack, hackmatack Bloom time: April &#8211; May Additional photos: Larix laricina budbreakcredit: Rowena Hopkins Larix laricina male cones.
