Their shape &#8211; widest above the middle of the leaf with a short pointed tip &#8211; distinguishes the plant from pin cherry, whose leaves are widest below the middle and taper gradually to a point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flowers &amp; Fruits: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flowers are white, 1-1.5 cm across, and hang in dense elongated clusters up to 15 cm long.<\/li>\n<li>Berries are red, ripening to bluish-black.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Habitat: <\/strong>The choke cherry prefers to grow in aspen poplar groves, ravines and the edges of creeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PlantWatch Pointers: <\/strong>Tag a typical shrub for observation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To Observe:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First bloom: when the first flowers are open on the observed shrub (3 places).<\/li>\n<li>Mid bloom: when 50% of the flowers are open on the observed shrub.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Distribution Map:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naturewatch.ca\/plantwatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/09\/prunus_virginiana_map.jpg\" alt=\"Distribution Map\" width=\"auto\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>This species is monitored in:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alberta<\/li>\n<li>Ontario<\/li>\n<li>Quebec<\/li>\n<li>Saskatchewan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote style=\"margin: 2% 5%;
