Trunk is smooth with light green or pale bark. Large trees can have black cracks in the bark at the base. Poplar trees are either male or female &#8211; only male trees are observed for PlantWatch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leaves &amp; Twigs: <\/strong>Leaves are small (3-7 cm long), light to medium green in colour, and round-shaped with a small, sharp tip.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flowers &amp; Fruits: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flowers are found in catkins, which look like soft caterpillars hanging from twigs; blooming is completed before leaves emerge.<\/li>\n<li>Male flowers: Fuzzy catkins emerge in late winter, and lengthen in early spring to reveal red\/pink pollen sacs. These release pollen into the air, and the catkin eventually dries up and falls off.<\/li>\n<li>Female flowers: Catkins turn green and capsules form, to later release fluffy, white seeds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> Aspen is common in both dry and moist woods, but cannot tolerate shade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PlantWatch Pointers:<\/strong> Tag a male tree for observation<\/p>\n<p><strong>To Observe:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First bloom: when the catkins on the male tree first start shedding pollen (3-places).<\/li>\n<li>Mid bloom: when 50% of the male catkins have lengthened and shed pollen.<\/li>\n<li>Leafing: when the first leaves have emerged and unfulded completely (3-places).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Distribution Map:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naturewatch.ca\/plantwatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/09\/populus_tremuloides_map.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"auto\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>This species is monitored in:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alberta<\/li>\n<li>British Culumbia<\/li>\n<li>Manitoba<\/li>\n<li>New Brunswick<\/li>\n<li>Newfoundland and Labrador<\/li>\n<li>Northwest Territories<\/li>\n<li>Nova Scotia<\/li>\n<li>Ontario<\/li>\n<li>Prince Edward Island<\/li>\n<li>Quebec<\/li>\n<li>Saskatchewan<\/li>\n<li>Yukon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote style=\"margin: 2% 5%;
