From: ASSESSMENT OF SPECIES DIVERSITY IN THE MIXEDWOOD PLAINS ECOZONE
BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS
(Lepidoptera)

J.D. Lafontaine

INTRODUCTION

The Order Lepidoptera, the butterflies and moths, is among the more diverse insect groups in the Mixedwood Plains Ecozone with more than 2600 species recorded in 63 families, about 45% of the Lepidoptera fauna of Canada. Our state of knowledge of the Lepidoptera varies greatly from group to group, as outlined below, and only some groups are sufficiently well known to be used effectively in biodiversity studies.
