BIRDS
Daniel F. Brunton
Approximately 450 species of birds have been recorded in the Mixedwood Plains Ecozone (Godfrey 1986, James 1991). A large proportion of these are transient migrants which have little sustained interaction with the natural environment of the ecozone. Most of these transients are arctic or boreal breeding species which winter in southern North America or in South America, stopping briefly in this area during spring and/or fall migration. The following discussion of birds considers only those species which maintain a substantial residency and have a significant ecological relationship with the natural environment of the Mixedwood Plains Ecozone viz., resident, breeding and/or wintering populations. |
