From: ASSESSMENT OF SPECIES DIVERSITY IN THE MIXEDWOOD PLAINS ECOZONE
SAWFLIES (Hymenoptera: Symphyta)

CHANGES IN RANGES AND POPULATION LEVELS

Sawflies are less well sampled than ground beetles and many groups of moths because there are few amateur sawfly workers. In this region, most collections have been made by entomology students and professionals. Therefore, the ranges are rougher in outline than in the above groups. Based on my extensive field work in the Mixedwood Plains Ecozone, I have observed declines in the populations of some species. Through intensive field work, I discovered the habitat requirements of several species previously considered rare (e.g. Adelesta nova (Norton), Caulocampus acericaulis (MacGillivray), Dolerus eurybis Ross, Tenthredo dissimilis (Norton), Strongylogaster remota Rohwer, etc.). These species were probably also common in the past, but previous collectors most likely did not explore their unusual habitats or had shorter field work seasons.
