ASSESSMENT OF SPECIES DIVERSITY IN THE MIXEDWOOD PLAINS ECOZONE
GROUND BEETLES
(Coleoptera: Carabidae)
Yves Bousquet
CONCLUDING REMARKS
The Mixedwood Plains Ecozone is undoubtedly the richest region of Canada for Carabidae.
As more than 98% of the species recorded from the Ecozone have been collected at
least once in the last 25 years, I believe that the original fauna in term of species
is intact. The introduction of exotic species have not displaced any of the native
elements. Because of clearing and development for farming has been extensive in the Ecozone, the abundance
of some native species have probably fallen. No species of Carabidae in the area
are regarded as endangered but some could be considered as threatened. This is the
case particularly of species with restricted distributional ranges or with narrow ecological
niches.
