Ideas for Sampling Templates

A sampling template is simply a device that helps you to determine the size of area that you will sample. Here are a few ideas:

String and Nails:

What You Will Need
  • four large nails
  • 2 pieces of string 30 cm long
  • 2 pieces of string 55 cm long
  • metre stick
What To Do
  1. Tie one end of the 30 cm piece of string to one nail.
  2. Tie the other end of the 30 cm piece of string to a second nail. Use the metre stick to make sure the string is now 25 cm long - adjust if necessary.
  3. Repeat with the other 30 cm piece of string.
  4. Secure the 55 cm pieces of string to the nails and adjust their length to 50 cm.
  5. Your sampling template should be a rectangle with the dimensions 25 cm by 50 cm.

Cardboard Frame:

Safety: An adult should build this template.

What You Will Need
  • large piece of heavy cardboard approximately 35 cm by 55 cm (a used lawn sign used in political/election campaigns works very well)
  • sharp knife or scissors
  • pencil
  • metre stick
What To Do
  1. Use the metre stick to lay out a rectangle 25 cm by 50 cm on the cardboard.
  2. Cut the inside of the cardboard out leaving a frame. The inside dimensions of the sampling template should be 25 cm by 50 cm.

Please note: This template can also be constructed with pieces of scrap lumber and a couple of screws.
